A Sizzling Summer

There's never been a summer like 2007. This summer is jam packed with more big budget films than ever. Multiple superhero movies, star-studded comedies and action-packed films are sure to draw large audiences to the theatre.

All three of the biggest Box Office hits of all time have sequels coming out this summer. In fact not just this summer, it's already started this month. Hollywood could have its first $4 billion summer, topping the record $3.95 billion haul from the first weekend in May through Labor Day in 2004. Modern Hollywood's best summer for attendance came in 2002 with 653 million tickets sold, another record that could fall.

Spider-Man 3, May's opening weekend totaled $151,116,516 marking the highest Friday-Sunday opening in cinema history! Spider-Man 3 broke every significant box office record, beating "Pirates of Caribbean 2" previous three-day record of $135.3M. Overall business saw a 68% spike over last summer's kick-off, when Mission Impossible III opened. Spider-Man 3 alone out-grossed "M:I 3" by $100M.

Shrek is back on May 18th, with Mike Myers back as the voice of the crusty ogre, in Shrek the Third. Shrek II is still the highest-grossing animated film of all time with $436.7 million.

Next week brings the debut of Johnny Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, following "Dead Man's Chest," last year's biggest hit which earned a cool $423.3 million. The third installment picks up where the record breaking 2006 smash hit left off with Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann allied with their old nemesis, Captain Barbossa, to rescue Captain Jack Sparrow from the terrifying ghost ship and its commander Davy Jones.

Studios plan to roll out a dozen more sequels over the course of the summer. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Ocean's Thirteen, The Bourne Ultimatum, Rush Hour 3 and Evan Almighty, plus the animated comedies The Simpsons Movie and Surf's Up.

Superstar actors appear in new blockbusters nearly every weekend this summer, targeting a variety of audiences. There is a consistency of options being offered. Ratatouille, the family-friendly cartoon, opens alongside Bruce Willis's popular character in Live Free of Die Hard one weekend. Shia LaBeouf brings back the Transformers the same weekend as superstar Robin Williams returns to comedy with License to Wed.

There is truly something for everyone as superhero sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, debuts along with the teen girls' mystery Nancy Drew. Adam Sandler and John Travolta will blow up the next week. Sandler's comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and John Travolta's musical Hairspray will draw audiences of all ages.
